A social and support group "for parents by parents" and our amazing special needs adult children.
Our vision is to assist our special needs adult children to interact with others through various activities such as swimming, bowling, movie night, field games, while parents also join in on the fun. There will also be occasions for parents to gather to speak with each other, ask for advice or just vent in a safe, non-stressful, non-judgmental environment where their adult children are welcome.
The GRR Legends social group was started by the parents of a former athlete of the Special Olympics Gilbert Roadrunners Unified Sports Team. Research found many support groups available for parents and several activity-based events for their adult children. However, there is nothing offered for these adult children or their parents under one umbrella. In reality, there are not too many options available for special needs adults. Our children are not cute little kids anymore and often not given a second thought by those who do not live this life every day. And this is where the idea for the GRR Legends social group started.
GRR Legends had its first meeting in April 2019. Currently, this is a closed group for special needs adults (17 and over) who are or were athletes participating with the Gilbert Roadrunners Unified sports team.
